Fees and Billing
Public and private hospital care in Australia can both provide a high standard of treatment, and Dr Ferguson is happy to talk through which setting may suit you. The notes below outline how consultations and surgery are billed. Individual quotes are confirmed when you book. Consultations in Wollongong are expected to begin in October 2026.
Consultations
There is a fee for first appointments and for review visits. Reviews are shorter, so they are charged at a lower rate.
Fees follow Australian Medical Association guidelines and usual specialist practice. A reduced fee is available if you hold a pensioner concession card or a Health Care Card.
A valid referral from a GP or another specialist is generally needed for a Medicare rebate. You can still be seen without a referral, but a rebate usually will not apply. Medicare covers part of an eligible consultation, and any remaining gap is payable by you.
Surgery
If an operation is recommended, you will receive a known-gap quote. Medicare and your private health fund pay most of the surgeon's account directly.
The remaining gap depends on your health fund. The maximum out-of-pocket surgeon's fee is $500, and that amount includes two post-operative visits. The anaesthetist will send a separate quote, which should be no more than the surgeon's gap. If an assistant's fee applies, that will be explained at your consultation.
The rooms will give you an estimate of your costs on the day if surgery is the best option. Cover still depends on your policy, waiting periods, excess and whether the procedure is included in your level of cover.
Other costs
Some charges sit outside the surgeon's known gap and your fund rebate. These can include:
- Hospital admission fees
- Radiology and imaging fees
- Pharmacy and medication costs
Payment
Payment can be made by EFTPOS, Visa, Mastercard or cash. Please do not send payment details through the website contact form.
